SENSES
LIVING A SUMMER DAY

In the garden of my childhood home,
nature offered a full spectrum of feeling,
from washes of color, to the warmth of the sun on my skin,
to the bird song, to the perfume of the flowers and grass,
and to the taste of the air, full of oxygen.

I used to wander barefoot in the grass
in the languid Long Island summer days
with a glass of lemonade, reveling in sensorial delight.
I remember how alive it made me feel to surrender
to the power and beauty of nature.

My young mind used to dance within this surrender.
I felt like I was tasting the palette of flowers I was seeing,
that my feet could see the moist earth below them,
that I could touch the sounds floating around me,
hear the rich perfume of the flowers,
and smell the lemonade sliding down my throat.

and a painter paint with his ears.’
