He took me down to the sea and told me about a landscape of people who were made up of their thoughts,
had turned into trees of thought, planted solid in black space.
Sea Sonata, Act I scene 4
‘…Ann Papoulis erases boundaries
between cultures of different nations and continents…’ Dnevnik
‘The two hour long performance in two acts uses the structure of a Greek drama…
we are given spoken voices, arias, sounds of nature, a combination of live and recorded music,
classical ballet and contemporary movements together with film…
the stage design is a white room with many doors for entrances and exits:
a sort of fictive labyrinth, where thoughts and memories come alive;
the costumes white, red and black…
the voices of the opera soloists create a meditative atmosphere…
the choreography is lively and complex…
each dancer is integrated as an individual into the work…
feelings fly freely throughout the opera house…’ A Theatrical Opus, Delo
‘What is actually Landscape: mind variations,
an opera, ballet, film or a piece of theater?
In a 2 hour symbiosis of video projections, dance, drama and opera,
and a large range of expression,
this question becomes irrelevant to the spectator.
He is absorbed into Ann Papoulis’ world,
which stimulates questions and self reflection.
He becomes a silent witness,
a quiet companion of the adventure unfolding on stage…
The performance is an original project containing
a wide spectrum of thought, strong expression, and a high aesthetic.
It is a show about our mistakes, fears, unexpressed feelings;
our captivity in the cage of the present
and the suggestion that our only shelter is in the freedom of the spirit…
the author enters into the most hidden rooms of thought:
the darkness of the human spirit, nothingness and timelessness.
The scenes are deep, dynamic and dramatic…
the arrival into unknown landscapes is relaxing, angelic…
the music (with great arrangement from Bojana Saljic) has
melancholy, daring, sensuality, mysticism, happiness…
The dramaturgical and choreographic structures are without conceptual holes.
The dramaturgy is rational and dynamic
even though the performance jumps from one media to another…’ Reality to Nothingness & Timelessness, Finance
