I was walking down the street the other day enjoying the early evening light.
My work was finished, and I was not in a hurry.
Something induced me to stop walking.
Standing in the center of the sidewalk, my feet began to tingle.
I looked down and saw bits of green
pushing through the cement.
A vivid image came into my mind of the vast realm of growth
that inhabited the area underneath my feet and sprawled throughout the city and beyond
– innumerable persistent roots growing continually
sideways, diagonally, deep downwards – and upwards.
Our man-made architectures are no match for their perseverance.
The roots make their way through them and burst out of them into the air and light,
demonstrating the staggering power of nature for survival.
